OUR STRUCTURE
INTRODUCTION
Nipa palm is one of Arecaceae species, which naturally grows in swamp and estuary areas throughout the Sarawak oceans. It is also widely distributed in Sarawak along the mangrove forests and one of the largest plantation area is in Tanjung Manis. Typically, nipa palm can yield fresh sap from the inflorescences which can be thermally concentrated to produce syrup. Nipa palm syrup represents the famous geographical natural product of Sarawak known as Gula Apong.
Nipa palm is one of the most widely distributed and useful palms in the mangrove forests of Southeast Asia. Nipa palm trees not only produce sap but also multipurposes products (edible fruits, vinegar, stem wood, building materials, fuel, fibres, etc.) In recent years, research on nipa palm has focused on its potential to obtain products such as sugar and bioethanol.
Traditionally, nipa palm syrup is prepared by heating the fresh sap in an open pan over a wood-fired stove with a continuous hand-blending until a viscous brown concentrated sweet liquid with the total soluble solids. The cooled syrup can be dried and then grinded to produce powdered syrup.
Sugar palm can produce sugar 2-4 times higher than sugarcane from its sap.
BENEFITS
One of the health concerns related to sugar consumption is the glycemic index (GI). Consumption of products with a high GI has been associated to many health disorders (e.g. obesity, diabetes, and heart disease). Research has shown that nipa palm sugar has a lower glycemic index than sugar derived from sugar cane.
A study on the chemical composition of granulated Palm Sugar from the sap of nipa palm suggested that nipa Palm Sugar was safe regarding reducing sugar content to maintain the constant blood sugar level. The sucrose, fat, and potassium content was found to be higher in nipa Palm Sugar. The results of the present study also proved that Palm Sugar possess very low active compounds regarding total phenolic compounds, and exhibiting higher antioxidant activites when compared to other tested sugars.
Additional Nipa Palm Benefits
and Ecosystem Services
When compared with other agricultural crops, the nipa palm can provide a wide range of other societal and environmental benefits including coastal storm protection from typhoons, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, etc.
